If your patio door drags, scrapes the bottom of the frame, or sits crooked enough that the lock no longer lines up, you probably do not need a new door. You need an adjustment. What a sliding glass door adjustment actually does (and what it cannot fix)
Every rolling panel hangs on two roller assemblies, one at each bottom corner. Each assembly sits in a housing with a screw that raises or lowers that corner. That pair of screws is the whole of how to adjust sliding glass door rollers: turning them changes three things at once, the height of the panel, whether it sits square in the opening, and how hard the rollers are pressed into the track.
That means an adjustment genuinely fixes a specific list of complaints:
- The panel drags on the sill or scrapes as it passes the frame.
- The door is heavy to open but the track looks clean.
- There is a visible wedge of daylight at the top or bottom when the door is shut.
- The latch no longer drops into the keeper, or you have to lift or shove the door to lock it.
- The door rolls fine for two feet and then binds in one spot.
It will not fix a roller whose bearing has already collapsed, a track that has been crushed flat, a broken lock body, or a failed glass seal. Those are parts problems, and no amount of screw-turning gets them back. Tools you need before you start
- A #2 Phillips screwdriver, plus a stubby one if your track runs tight to a wall.
- A 4-foot level, or a phone level app.
- A shop vacuum and a stiff brush.
- A flat pry bar or wood shims, to take the panel weight off the rollers.
- Silicone spray, never a petroleum lubricant, which holds Florida grit like flypaper.
- A flashlight. The adjustment holes sit in shadow.
How to adjust sliding glass door rollers in 7 steps
Work in this order. The order matters more than the technique, and most DIY attempts go wrong because they start at step 4.
Step 1 — Clean the track before you touch a screw
A door that binds on dirt will still bind after you adjust it, and now it will be at the wrong height as well. Vacuum the bottom track, brush the corners out, and run a rag along the raised rib the rollers ride on. In Central Florida that rib collects lawn sand, pollen and pet hair in a hard grey paste. Clean it until you can see bare metal, then slide the door and re-test. Plenty of doors that felt like they needed adjusting do not need anything else.
Step 2 — Find the adjustment screws
Look at the bottom of the leading and trailing stiles, the vertical edges of the moving panel. You are looking for one of three things: a small round hole in the face of the stile, a plastic plug you can pop out with a fingernail, or a hole in the narrow edge of the panel. Behind it is a Phillips head. Some doors have a second screw higher up that adjusts the top guide instead. If you genuinely cannot find a screw on either stile, stop and check the brand section below rather than forcing anything.
Step 3 — Take the weight off the rollers
This is the step almost everyone skips. A loaded roller assembly fights the screw, and you will either strip the head or feel nothing happen. Lift the panel slightly with a pry bar under the bottom rail, or slide a shim under it, so the roller is no longer carrying the glass. Now the screw turns with normal hand pressure.
Step 4 — Turn a quarter turn at a time
Clockwise almost always extends the roller and raises that corner of the panel. Counter-clockwise lowers it. Quarter turns only. The travel on most roller assemblies is a small fraction of an inch end to end, so a full rotation can take you straight past the sweet spot and jam the panel against the head of the frame.
Step 5 — Test after every turn
Release the weight, slide the door its full travel, and listen. You are aiming for a door that runs the whole opening with one hand and no change in effort. If it now drags at the far end instead of the near end, you have raised one corner too far and the panel is tilted.
Step 6 — Balance the two rollers against each other
Rollers work as a pair. Raising only the leading edge tips the panel and puts all the load on one wheel, which is how a freshly adjusted door destroys a roller in a season. Put the level on the top rail of the panel. Adjust the second screw until the top rail reads level and the gap along the top of the frame is even from end to end.
Step 7 — Re-check the lock and the weather seal
Changing the panel height moves the latch too. Close the door and check that the latch drops cleanly into the keeper without lifting or leaning on the panel, and that the weatherstripping still touches along the full height of the interlock. If the lock now misses, go to the latch section below before you touch the roller screws again.
How to adjust sliding glass door height so the panel sits square
Height and square are two different problems, and treating them as one is why doors get worse instead of better.
Height is how far the panel sits above the sill. Too low and it drags; too high and the top rail scrapes the head track and the door jumps the bottom track when you push it hard. Square is whether the panel is parallel to the frame. Diagnose it by closing the door and reading the gap where the moving panel meets the fixed one: if that vertical line of daylight is wide at the top and pinched at the bottom, the panel is tilted, not just low.
The fix for tilt is to raise the corner on the pinched side, or lower the corner on the wide side, and only that corner. Then re-level the top rail. This is the part of the job that separates a door that works for years from one you are back at in a month: get it square first, then set the overall height.
One honest caveat. In a lot of Central Florida homes the frame itself has moved with the slab, and the opening is no longer square. You can chase that with roller screws for an hour and never win, because you are trying to make a square panel fit a frame that has racked. That is a sliding glass door adjustment job where the fix is at the frame, not the roller.
How to adjust sliding glass door latch and keeper alignment
If the door slides beautifully and still will not lock, the latch and the keeper are no longer meeting. Work it in this order:
- Close the door and look straight at the latch. Note whether the hook or bolt is sitting above, below, or short of the slot in the keeper.
- If it is high or low by a small amount, the keeper is usually the easier fix. Most keepers are held by two screws in vertical slots, so loosening them lets you slide the keeper up or down a few millimetres and re-tighten.
- If the latch is short of the keeper entirely, the panel is not closing far enough. Check for debris in the side jamb and check the interlock weatherstrip, which swells and stiffens in Florida humidity.
- If the keeper has no adjustment slots, or the latch mechanism itself feels loose or gritty in the handle, you are past adjustment and into lock repair.
Do not solve a latch problem by raising the whole panel. It works for a week and it puts the door back out of level, which is where the original drag came from.
Adjustment screws by brand: what actually changes
The principle is the same on every residential slider. The access is not.
- Builder-grade aluminium and vinyl sliders, most of what went into Central Florida tract homes, put a single Phillips screw behind a small hole in the face of each stile. Easiest to adjust, quickest to wear out, because the roller is usually a stamped steel wheel on a plain bearing.
- Andersen and PGT doors tend to be heavier panels with a heavier roller assembly, and access is often through the edge of the stile rather than the face. Take the extra minute to find the real screw rather than driving something that is not an adjuster. These are also the doors that land in our oversized and high-end tier if the rollers do need replacing.
- Older doors of any brand often have adjusters seized with corrosion. If the screw will not move under normal pressure, do not lean on it. A snapped adjuster head turns a straightforward roller job into a much bigger one.
Model and year change the details, so if the plug is not where this describes, check the opposite face and the panel edge before deciding your door has no adjustment at all.
Why Orlando sliding doors drift out of adjustment
Doors elsewhere go decades without needing this. Central Florida doors need it repeatedly, and the reasons are local:
- Humidity and heat cycling. The National Weather Service office covering Central Florida records the sustained humidity and daily temperature swing that keeps aluminium and vinyl frames expanding and contracting all year. A door set perfectly in January can bind in August.
- Grit in the track. Sandy soil, lawn treatment and constant patio traffic fill our tracks fast. Grit under a roller flattens the wheel, the panel drops, and the door needs adjusting again within months.
- Salt air. Wherever coastal air reaches, the steel inside a builder-grade roller and the adjusters themselves corrode. A seized adjuster is why a door that “has no adjustment” often does.
- Slab settlement. Florida slabs move. When the opening racks, the panel is square and the frame is not, and roller adjustment alone will never close the gap.
- Hurricane season. Impact-rated panels are much heavier than the glass they replaced, so they load their rollers harder and drop out of adjustment sooner. Replacement, as opposed to repair, also has to satisfy Florida Building Code requirements for the opening.
When adjusting will not work, and what the repair costs
Stop adjusting and get the rollers replaced when any of these are true:
- You have run the screws to the end of their travel and the door still drags.
- The door rolls, then thumps, then rolls, which is a flat spot on the wheel.
- You can hear grinding rather than rumbling.
- The panel has come out of the bottom track more than once.
- The adjustment screw spins freely without changing anything, which means the assembly inside has come apart.
