Modern Sliding Door Styles, and What They Mean to Live With
Patio doors have changed a lot. Bigger glass, thinner frames, wider openings. Some of that is worth having and some of it is worth thinking about first.
Thin frames and big glass
The current look is as much glass and as little frame as possible. It genuinely transforms a room.
Bigger panels are also heavier panels, and heavier panels are harder on rollers. That is not a reason to avoid them, but it is a reason to keep the track clean.
Multi-panel and pocket doors
Three and four panel doors open up a whole wall. Pocket doors slide into the wall so the opening is completely clear.
Pocket doors look spectacular. They are also the hardest to service, because getting at a panel sitting inside a wall cavity is a bigger job than lifting one out of a standard track.
Flush and low-profile tracks
A track flush with the floor looks clean and removes the trip hazard.
It also gives water and grit fewer places to go, so drainage design matters and sweeping matters more. Worth asking how the track drains before choosing one.
Glass choices that matter here
In Central Florida the glass spec does more for comfort than the frame does. Low-E coatings cut the heat coming through a west-facing wall of glass noticeably.
Impact glass is the other consideration, and worth discussing for insurance as much as for storms.
The practical questions
- How heavy is each panel, and how are the rollers rated for it?
- How does the track drain?
- Can a panel be removed for service without dismantling the wall?
- Are replacement rollers and handles readily available?
That last one gets overlooked. An unusual imported system can mean a long wait for a part that would otherwise be a same-week fix.
